“Hausa- The Hausa are one of the largest ethnic groups in all of Africa, with roughly 50 million found through the Sahel region. Islam was introduced to the Hausa in the 11th century and most still practice it to this day. Between the 11th and 15th centuries, the Hausa became renowned as merchant, architects, and equestrians, contributing must to the development of the Malian empire’s city-states. Today there has been a growing movement amongst Hausa woman writers known as ittattafan soyayya, which focuses on stories of family drama and romance. Although they have been targeted by misogynist and Islamic fundamentalist groups, the novels remain very popular and have contributed to woman’s literacy in the region.”
